Creating a Fall Tablescape

Fall is usually the slowest season on the farm. With the shorter days and colder nights we spend most of our time reflecting on the labor of spring and summer. Weeds have (usually) been tamed, pruning is done, compost has been applied and the fruit is set. We let the cold nights do their work to sweeten and color the oranges that have grown over the season. It probably contributes to why Thanksgiving is not only the first major holiday of the season, but also a favorite of David and I.
We both have large families and it is such a great excuse to gather and share a meal with a long weekend ahead of us. In light of this we try to savor that time together with siblings, aunts, uncles, parents and grandparents with an experience that feels as special as we feel this season is.
I accomplished this with a table scape this year. I encourage you to find a theme or something that you are drawn to to build around. Whether it’s a specific color of glasses that are a family heirloom, a flower you can’t get enough of, or candlesticks you bought but can’t seem to find the perfect place for in your home.
This year I chose to forage around the farm for some fall decor, and used some dried oranges, sunflowers, pumpkins and leaves. I try to keep everything on our table low and narrow as the most important part of our meal is connecting with those who are gathered. Creating a fall table scape creates a pause in an otherwise busy day for me when I can stop and enjoy something beautiful.
I find that everyone has their own unique style and taste. If you pick something for the day that you are passionate about and love, people will enjoy what you have created as much as you do.
Have a safe, and happy Thanksgiving.
